Dear Parents,
I want to share with you an amazing resource that is available to you and your student through our library: audiobooks! Using a program called Overdrive, you can download a huge variety of audiobooks (and eBooks too!) These can be loaded on to any computer or device for an easy and convenient way to listen.
Why listen to audiobooks?
Audiobooks are a very engaging way to access a story and all readers benefit from listening. Think about the time when your children snuggled up to listen to a story being read aloud. There is a strong emotional connection to listening to stories that helps bring literary worlds to life. That special moment in time was also a moment when your student was learning what it means to be a reader. Audiobooks can give your student a similar experience now.
Listening to audiobooks can help students learn to decode, comprehend, and pronounce difficult words. It can build your child's vocabulary exponentially as well as provide a model for reading with fluency and expression. Audiobooks also help students learn to think deeply about stories and build their capacity to critically listen. Neuroscience has even recently proven that listening to a book and reading a book activate the same parts of the brain.
But the biggest reason to listen to audiobooks is that they are engaging, fun, and for everyone! Many are produced with professional actors or read by the author themselves. There is often added production to help make the story come to life. Since all students like audiobooks, those with a reading disability fit in with all of their peers, reducing any stigma they might feel. And listening to audiobooks helps make reading fun and enjoyable, fostering a lifelong love of reading.
To get started visit the library webpage and click on the link to Overdrive. I also recommend downloading the app "Sora" on any device to help make checking out these audiobooks a breeze.
